Private Family Lunch and Hortus Bulborum

Due to the limited opening times of the Hortus Bulborum, this tour is only possible between April 6 and May 10.

Bulb Fields

9am Meet and greet with your private, English-speaking guide / driver in the hotel lobby, from where you will be taken for a 45-minute drive by luxurious private car or minivan to the colorful bulb district.

9.45am Upon arrival you will be taken for an off the beaten path scenic drive through the spectacular blooming bulb fields, including the opportunity for taking pictures within the bulb fields (where possible).

In addition to the tulip, there are many more flower varieties that are grown here, such as Crocuses, Daffodils and Hyacinths.

10.30am The drive will end for a guided tour of the Keukenhof flower exhibit, located in the picturesque village Lisse, the heart of the bulb district.

This spectacular flower exhibit cover 79 acres on which roughly 8 million bulbs are planted every year.

Each garden within the park has a specific design and character.
A huge indoor spring garden is staged in 76 ft2 of pavilions during the annual exhibition where over 500 different varieties are to be seen in 10 indoor flower shows under the name ‘Parade’. The 2019 theme of the Keukenhof is Flower Power.

Climb the steps of the Groningen-type corn mill to see the view.  See the exhibition of some 30 sculptures and other objects d’art throughout the park.

2pm After this exiting tour, you will be taken to the private home of the Family Verhoef, located at only a stone drop from the Keukenhof for a delicious Dutch lunch. Enjoy and talk with the owners and see how they live in their nice modern home in an upscale residential area. If the weather permits, the lunch will be served in the family garden. A very special experience!

Hortus Bulborum

2pm Fully refreshed, we continue the tour with a drive to the picturesque village of Limmen, for a guided tour of the historical Hortus Bulborum.

2.45pm Hortus Bulborum is the only garden in the world, where more than 4000 different spring-flowering historical bulbs have been collected. Every spring the fields color in the most diverse shades.

The valuable collection consists mainly of beautiful historic tulips, daffodils and hyacinths.

In addition to functioning as a gene bank, the garden has a seasonal display of thousands of heirloom bulbs, some of which are no longer in commercial production. Certain tulips originated in the 16thcentury. The on display Fritillaria persica was already in cultivation as early as 1577, while the oldest narcissus is several centuries older yet. The garden, therefore, provides a fascinating overview of these immensely popular spring bloomers grown through the centuries.

Enjoy legendary tulips as the ‘Duc van Tol Red and Yellow ‘(1595), ‘Zomerschoon’ (1620) popular during Tulipmania (1635-1637) or the exotic parrot tulip ‘Perfecta” (1750) as well as many other examples.

4.15pm From here, you will be taken back to your hotel in Amsterdam, where you have the remainder of the day for your own leisure. You will arrive back around 5pm.
