The Museum of Bags and Purses, opened in June 2007 is located in a spectacular monumental building from 1664. The building has two fine period rooms with original ceiling paintings and mantelpieces dating from the 17th and 18th century.
The museum’s collection originated from the private collection of Hendrikje Ivo, who collected bags for thirty years. What began, as a personal fascination became an extensive bag collection that has been on exhibition at the museum’s location in Amstelveen for the last ten years.
The collection covers the Western bag that ranges from the Middle Ages (16th century) through to the present day. It is the only museum in the world with such an extensive and specialized collection. The museum also plays a role in stimulating Dutch and international designers by organizing exhibitions of their work, and by selling their work in the museum shop and at the web shop.
Felix Tal’s fan collection. Some 150 fans from the famous fan collection of Felix Tal are on loan at the museum. The collection reflects the historical development of the fan from the 17th century until the 19th century, with the accent on the European fan.
